Tips for Cleaning a Headstone

Apr 04, 2024

A common question we'll often get is people asking us if there is a right way to clean a headstone. While cleaning a headstone might seem straightforward, there are several best practices we highly recommend. This quick guide covers everything from necessary supplies to essential tips for maintaining a headstone.

Materials to Use For Cleaning

  • Water

Considering you probably won't have access to a hose or water source at the cemetery, it's essential to bring your own water supply. It’s recommended to bring at least five gallons of water for a standard-sized headstone, and possibly more if you're cleaning a companion headstone or a family plot.

  • Brushes

It's advisable to bring various sizes of brushes to assist in cleaning the headstone. Brushes are effective in removing dirt and algae buildup. A toothbrush is suitable for smaller crevices, while a standard scrubbing brush is ideal for larger areas. Ensure that the bristles of all brushes are soft, natural, and non-dyed.

  • Sponges

A large sponge is recommended to help apply water and keep the headstone damp while cleaning. Ensure the sponge is dye-free to prevent accidental staining of the headstone. Avoid using sponges with a rough side, as they may be too harsh for the surface.

  • Scrapers and Tools

To tackle dirt lodged deep in crevices or hard-to-reach spaces of the memorial, opt for gentle tools like wood picks, plastic scrapers, and popsicle sticks. Avoid using metal tools to prevent potential damage.

  • Towels

Ensure you have a few towels on hand to dry the stone at the end of the cleaning process.

Steps for Cleaning a Headstone

  1. It's advisable to begin by clearing away as much dirt or buildup as possible before proceeding with any scrubbing.
  2. With the brushes and scrapers, delicately remove any dirt, grass, debris, leaves, moss, or other buildup. Take care not to scratch the headstone during this process.
  3. After removing as much dirt and buildup as possible, dampen the headstone using a sponge or by pouring water gently over it. Ensure you have a continuous supply of clean water. Begin cleaning from the bottom, gently removing dirt and buildup from the headstone's surface and working your way up to the top. Cleaning from bottom to top prevents dirty water from dripping down and affecting your progress. Continuously rinse your sponge with clean water and remove dirt until the headstone is thoroughly cleaned.
  4. Give the headstone a final rinse by pouring clean water over it. After rinsing, inspect the headstone to see if there's any remaining dirt that can be removed using a brush or scraper.
  5. Pat the headstone dry at the end of the cleaning process with a clean towel.

Important Factors to Note

  • Avoid using soap to clean the headstone as the chemicals can cause damage to the material.
  • Choose a day with moderate temperature to clean the headstone.
  • Ensure moisture while cleaning the headstone to avoid damage.
